My Students

Our school, teachers, and our 7th grade students are hard-working and innovative, creating learning opportunities for our Face to Face, and at home students. Although we don't always get enough funding for all our activities, we always do our best with what we do have and are extremely grateful for the items and experiences we are granted.

My students belong to a multi-cultural, broad socio-economic Houston school in the far northern part of the city.

We strive to provide the students with many opportunities to do hands-on science. Labs, group work, and craft-activities are part of our everyday life. These activities are a classroom favorite but they are sometimes difficult to fund.

My Project

The first question our 7th graders ask every year is, "Will we get to dissect a frog?" Since it is one of our favorite labs, and STEAM projects, the answer is always, yes! Last year we the timing of dissection fell right before Spring Break. Due to the Pandemic, this was the last hands-on activity our students participated in at school. It was a powerful memory for them!

The frogs we are requesting are a connection between our human body systems unit, and adaptations in living things.

We use the frogs as an extension activity at the end of the unit. Students will work in teams to compare the structure and function of various organs of the human body. They learn anatomical terms, investigate structural adaptations, and make conclusions based on their investigation of the frogs. They will make incisions and even remove various organs and examine tissues under a microscope in an effort to compare structure and function. We take the project a step further than just science, by including a student art and thank you project with the dissection. This allows our budding artists and authors to utilize their talents also!

7th grade science relies heavily on the understanding of life sciences.

This hands-on experience provides a very "real" and meaningful lab investigation that allows students to make very important connections. The experience that they will have had during this lab will forever be engraved in their brains. I mean have you forgotten your first dissection?
