TI-84s to Help Provide Students More Access to Higher Math
My students need three TI-84 graphing calculators to use in the classroom in order to access the higher content necessary to succeed in Pre-Calculus.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For many of my students, the difference between success and failure is the support of a graphing calculator. By having the ability to use this support, they are able to access higher level math that will allow them to be successful in post-secondary educational experiences.
The most defining characteristic of my students is their strong sense of community and desire to work towards making a better life for themselves and their families.
Our school is an urban public high school with over 90% English language learners and over 90% free and reduced lunch. They understand the importance of an education and how it can lead to more opportunities after high school. Many of them are preparing to attend college in within the next two years in order to have better jobs than their parents. They are incredibly hard working and driven to succeed.
My Project
By having the graphing calculators, I will be able to prepare students to be more successful on the ACT, allowing them access to more post-secondary opportunities. In addition, Pre-Calculus is a difficult class and is greatly assisted by the use of the tables and graphs that only a graphing calculator provides. We will be studying twelve major function types and use the calculators to make predictions based upon mathematical models. Students will also participate in activities that will require them to analyze different graphical representations of mathematical concepts. Calculators will allow students to make these discoveries for themselves in a more authentic way than can be provided by a teacher-lead lecture. The goal is for students to become self-sufficient learners who can analyze different mathematical concepts with the use of appropriate technology.
I believe that it is crucial to provide students with as much access to higher mathematics as possible in order to give them more opportunities after high school.
Jobs in the math and science fields are currently difficult to fill due to a lack of qualified applicants. Having a graphing calculator makes access to this necessary math possible. For some students, it could make the difference that allows them to be successful in a math or science fields in the future.
