Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Currently, I have been at Marshall High School for 3 years. Marshall is a Chicago Public School on the West side. Most students are from low income families and receive free lunch as a result. I have been teaching mostly Algebra 1 for freshman. The main issue with the students is that some of them are so far below with math and reading, it is hard to teach Algebra when they need basic skills as well. I, along with calculators, can help the students by building up their confidence. As a school, we received some calculators for classroom use a few years ago. Throughout the years, the calculators have been disbursed between the teachers. I personally do not have enough for a classroom set. In my classroom, there are enough calculators for 19 students. I have over 30 students in one of my classes. This is an inconvenience for the students to share the calculators. I am looking to receive at least 11 more calculators to make an even 30. When students have access to calculators, more work is done and more students complete their work. I feel that the calculators are a valuable and necessary resource.
