REQUEST for Eight TI-83 Graphing Calculators for Math Department NEED: My high school serves a diverse student population with approximately 25% on the free/reduced lunch plan which is an economic indicator of financial need. The percentage of economically disadvantaged students may be higher than actual free lunch records show because many prideful high school students refuse to sign up for free lunch. Currently, there are approximately 1400 students registered for math at my school. Yet, only 900 students own graphing calculators for use with math. This leaves 500 (35%) math students without graphing calculators. Classroom teachers have part of a classroom set of calculators to share with students for classroom use. They have none to loan students for homework. Some students take the SAT without a calculator for the math section. REQUEST: This request is for eight graphing calculators. On our seven periods day eight additional calculators will enable fifty-six students to have the use of graphing calculators daily. These same calculators can be used for several years. Our goal is for our school to eventually own a sufficient number of calculators that all indigent students can "rent" them for a nominal yearly fee. Then all students will have the same resource aid for learning as well as successful completion of the SAT. CREATIVE/INTERDISCIPLINARY: Career & Technology teachers met with math teachers to develop lessons to reinforce the math concepts. For example, the Technology Education teacher's classes build mousetrap cars. The technology teacher and a math teacher devised several math lessons to figure time/speed ratio, mass/speed ratio. The Foods I students calculate nutrient requirements when creating daily food log. My own Interior Design students calculate the rolls/ feet of wallpaper for rooms. CTE project data will be shared with math teachers for lessons and the calculators will be shared with CTE teachers for student use.
