Thunder Bay River Water Shed Project

My students need waders, calipers, scales, and plankton net to help us continue our research as to why zebra mussels are disappearing for the Thunder Bay River.

My Students

Michigan’s freshwater is under invasion from hundreds of invasive species and every seven months a new invasive species is introduced to the watershed by ocean going vessels. Currently there are one hundred fifty-eight invasive species in the Great Lakes watershed.

Nothing has been more costly to the Great Lakes and our local freshwater resources than zebra mussels.

On average, they have cost our local coastal area fourteen million dollars a year in lost tourism and fishery resources. These fifth graders want to be part of the solution. This research project was created and developed by students three years ago wanting to preserve their local freshwater. It has grown to involve a long list of classrooms and community partners. Our research is focused on understanding how these invasive species are changing our freshwater ecosystems.

My Project

With the help of researchers, we have created a time series research project that monitors seven locations on the Thunder Bay River watershed. Recent data trends show that zebra mussel population has drastically declined in the last few years in Lake Huron and data we have collected this fall has shown a drop in the size and overall population of the zebra mussel in the Thunder Bay River. My students have asked the question, “What is causing this sudden disappearance?” Our hypothesis is focused on two things; that the zebra mussels have so over populated themselves that they ran out of food, or that another invasive species is out competing the zebra mussels. These resources will help us process the data we are collecting faster and more accurately.

Thunder Bay River Water Shed Project is part of a thematic multi-year project developed by fifth graders.

The project is a place-based educational experience where the students are involved in researching real ecological problems caused be invasive species on our local watershed. Place-based education emphasizes hands-on, real world learning experiences to maximize the educational experience.
