Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Special Education reading Intervention teacher working with groups of struggling or non-readers. I teach at a school where over 97% of the students qualify for free lunch/reduced lunch. My students are growing up in a school district that is identified as the poorest congressional district in our city where most of the families are living below poverty line.
My students are identified as struggling readers and often lose focus during learning for reasons beyond their control.
I also support a group of dedicated and enthusiastic PreK3s (yes 3 year olds!) and with them and my upper grades I'm helping them develop socially and emotionally. My students are very hard working and even though most of them live in a community facing extreme poverty they come to class dedicated to work.
School is their refuge and a place to find their voice. Many of my students have disabilities specifically: learning disabilities, speech&language disabilities, ADHD and Autism. I want classroom resources that allows them access to their learning and to teach them strategies to manage their disabilities and gain independence over their own learning and find a voice!
My Project
During small groups, especially depending on the position of our desks and chairs using a small tablet can be nearly impossible for everyone in the group to see.
With a 10.5 inch display iPad, my students will be more engaged because they will be able to see the visual supports in every lesson especially my students with disabilities and my students that are ELLs because without visuals they can miss the gist of the lesson and seem disengaged.
Being able to see the visual supports that I provide in every lesson will also reduce student frustration encountered if they didn't get the seat right next to me because the whole group could view the same image in the same quality with a When I ask "thumbs up If you can see the screen" I look forward to the day ALL thumbs can go up and EVERYONE see and participate fully !
