Throwing Mud with Meaning! Teaching Ceramic Techniques
My students need ceramic glazes and clay tools to have a successful clay experience. These tools will provide them the ability to learn proper clay techniques.
My students have an inability to transfer knowledge from one class to another. It is my hope that through this project I can show them traditional and historical utilitarian techniques with clay.
We are an urban school facing many academic challenges.
I have found that by offering a hands-on experience students retain knowledge learned with a greater capacity. Our population is comprised of approximately 75% African American, 23% Latino/Hispanic, and 2% Other. These students are consistent low performers on state mandated testing reflecting a comprehension deficit.
My Project
The children will be exposed to the techniques of tribal pottery making with these supplies. They will first be taught the traditional techniques of hand building to work their way up to the wheel, learning the difference between utilitarian art and art for art's sake.
My students need ceramic glazes and tools to have a successful clay experience.
These tools will provide them the ability to learn proper clay techniques. The children have very limited exposure to other customs and cultures. Using these materials they will be able to explore how historically the ceramic arts were intended to be used.
