Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an elementary school where every child matters. School is often students' "safe place" where they know they will be fed and loved by all the teachers around them. Every day the teachers are here for the students because sometimes we are the only constant thing in their lives.
At our school, we want all students to succeed no matter what obstacles they have in their way.
Many of our students struggle with broken homes. When education isn't the number one priority in the household, we as teachers have to teach students to be self-motivated and develop a love of learning or determination in everything that they do.
My Project
In the spring you can often find 60-70 third through sixth graders out on the field after school looking for the track event that they will be best in. Some love running relays or sprints, while others enjoy the high jump and shot put. Kids love to run. Why not harness that energy into a sport.
Success in the throwing depends on the consistent practice of skills and techniques.
This year we are fortunate enough to have a coach with some throwing experience and we are excited to see the outcome on the track field.
Currently we only have 2 shot puts and no discuses to practice with our kids. Our two shot puts are very dented and banged up. We have yet to complete in any discus event due to the fact that our school doesn't own any of the equipment. With the funding of this project, we will be able to compete in all events and teach young athletes the foundational skills needed to compete in track and field throwing events.
