My Students

Our high school is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in a small community with access to a rich history, including Old Time and Bluegrass music. In our 8th grade community, we hope to make transitioning to our high school successful and prepare them for life after graduation.

Our students are community-oriented and hope to work within the community in which they live.

After graduation, many of our students live in our community and work as welders, mechanics, farmers, nurses, child care providers, teachers, and musicians.

My Project

I discovered my students loved the classic novel, The Outsiders. Even if they had read it before, my students were completely engaged in the novel.

Our standards of learning ask us, as teachers, to help our students understand the author's craft and style.

After reading the novel, The Outsiders, I will ask students to choose another one of S.E. Hinton's books to read in small groups to have a group study.

This will allow students to learn more about how an author writes, works, and shares their work. We will compare and contrast the novels and students will lead discussions about the books they chose to read.
