This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students are excited for school each and every day, looking forward to after school extracurricular activities such as our robotics club. However, as with any 6th grader their attention spans leave something to be desired. They truly want to learn and give it their all, however, their environment requires them to share their attention between multiple things. Their neighborhood is next to government housing and has very little healthy food choices. They have very few entertainment options compare to students in low poverty areas.

My Project

Students will utilize the materials first and foremost to be grossed out as most do. However, once they get over being grossed out they will learn what a heart actually looks like. Not that fancy heart that they see on valentines cards, but an actual once beating heart. Students will discover how the heart works and what the inside of their hearts looks like. They will dissect the heart and label each part as they find it.

In a time when the STEM field is more important than ever.

It is important to engage and hook students into loving science. Many students just need the right experience or interaction to see what they love. Today I still get students asking if they can come in and take part in the dissection this year, even though I had them last year. It is amazing that one experiment can engage students creativity and interest in STEM fields.
