Thriving in the Desert: Our Indoor Garden Journey

Help me give my students Large Hydroponics Growing System kit to help our students grow tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers indoors year-round. We’d also love smaller hydroponic kits with adjustable lights and germination pods for herbs and hands-on learning.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

All of our students light up when they get to explore science with their hands. While we have a small outdoor garden, the desert heat makes it difficult to keep crops alive, and not every child can attend our garden club. That’s why I’m so excited to bring hydroponic gardening into our science room—where every student will have the chance to grow, observe, and learn. With these hydroponic systems, my students will discover how plants grow without soil, how light and water work together, and how sustainable food systems can make a difference—even in the desert. It turns our classroom into a living science lab where students don’t just learn about plants—they nurture them from seed to harvest.

This project will give all students, including those with special needs, the opportunity to explore science in a hands-on, sensory-rich, and joyful way.

Hydroponics opens the door for every child to feel successful: they’ll strengthen their vocabulary as they describe plant growth, measure and track changes, and take pride in daily care routines. Students with sensory needs will benefit from the calming sounds of water and the gentle light, while others will build fine motor skills and confidence as they prune, plant, and harvest. My goal is to create a classroom where science feels personal and exciting—where every child sees themselves as a scientist, a grower, and a caretaker. I can’t wait to watch their curiosity bloom.
