My students need a collection of Mo Willems books for morning meeting read aloud time, independent reading, and homework completion. They love Elephant and Piggie!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Remember when you were in reading class and were called on, by your teacher, to read a passage from a book? You didn't raise your hand and yet you wondered why you were called. If you excel in reading, no problem. But if you struggled with producing blends and letter sounds, this was a big problem!
My students are a pure delight!
They are the most persevering young group of scholars that I have encountered in my many years of teaching. Located in Washington, D.C., they are not exposed to many resources outside of school. My students are unable to attend school in their neighborhood, due to disabilities beyond their control. Even more admirable is the fact that they do not allow their disabilities to deter them from keeping up with their peers inside of our school.
To see them in action is a wonderful sight. After breakfast each morning, we all engage in morning meeting. This is a time during which my students are able to discuss plans for the day, discuss matters with peers, and read a story.
Lately, they have become interested in the Elephant and Piggie tales from author Mo Willems. Who can blame them? The illustration and words used by Mo Willems are accessible to my students and they are able to read to make connections to the outside world!
My Project
If you've ever encountered the Elephant and Piggie tales from Mo Willems, then you know exactly why my students are so engaged. Hilarious tales of friendship with stories such as "I Am Invited To A Party" and "I Have A New Toy" assist my students with reading. They also provide anecdotes to problem solving between friends. With these books, my students are able to read to one another with fluency, complete comprehension questions, and earn points on their reading log by practicing at home. To think it all started with reading the book Knufflebunny! I am excited that my students have become so attached to Mo Willems work. I want to make sure that I can keep their momentum going with reading! My students need a collection of Mo Willems books for morning meeting read aloud time, independent reading, and homework completion.
Confidence associated with reading is amazing!
My students are finding joy with their ability to not only read words, but to read them with expression. They will now be presented with books that are on their reading level that will provide the gateway to increasing their reading levels. This is a resource that is sure to keep the literacy ball rolling. We are hoping that you can help fund our project!
