Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a middle school on the northwest side of Chicago. The students here are 93.5% Hispanic and 95% are considered low income. We also serve a population that has 27% limited English proficiency.
After 20 years of general education, I am now working with diverse learners.
These students are so anxious to learn, but I don't have the materials I need to meet them at their levels. Most of my students are in 7th grade, yet many of them are still learning to read or read significantly below grade level.
My Project
Students are more technology proficient and independent after our past year of remote learning due to the pandemic. I want to continue that proficiency and build their literacy skills with access to more books than I could ever fit in our classroom and access to audio books for my struggling readers.
Kindle tablets in the classroom will give my students the ability to find and read books on their own from a huge selection.
Finding books that interest them helps motivate all level of readers. As a Special Education teacher, I know that giving students the chance to access grade level text through audio books builds their comprehension and self esteem.
