Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it." - -Albert Einstein As my students grapple with the idea of being a bystander, I want to give them as much information about the world around them.

My tenth grade students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or fourth language.

In total, my students speak more than 7 different languages, including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Somali and Haitian Creole. For many of my students, reading in their native language was a struggle. Many of the students had reading interventions or gaps in their learning in their own countries.

My Project

Two of the essential questions in my class this year are: Are we bystanders? How do we shape our reality? These eleven books will help my students become more informed about the world in which we live. They will read about recent wars in Afghanistan and Vietnam, while also learning about each other's religion. This book collection is a perfect way to help my students become informed and active citizens.

My students are very curious about the world around them.

Some of the most popular books in my classroom library are about religion and history. Your donation will help enrich the classroom library providing a variety of titles on recent movements, wars and religious ideas. My students will be able to read and understand their world and make their own decisions about important issues.
