Thorne Miniature Rooms: Reading, Writing, and Creating
Help me give my students books that take place at the famous Thorne Miniature Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago. After reading and visiting the exhibit, students will write, create with LEGOs their own stories.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My urban 3rd graders are mostly English language learners. They are very motivated to learn and need many experiences to build their content knowledge and academic performance. Throughout the day, they need to be exposed to learning experiences that engage them, especially in the areas of reading and writing.
They need meaningful reading and writing experiences to help them build their reading and writing skills, strengthen their confidence, and demonstrate their creativity as they work in teams to write and create their own miniature room stories.
My Project
My students need experiences where they can connect their learning in and out of the classroom. It's especially important for them because they are English learners and most read below the 4th grade reading level. With these books, students will read in small groups the story, Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone where 2 students shrink to experience the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute. It's an adventure story students will love and will get to experience on a field trip to see the exhibit.
After reading the story and visiting the Thorne rooms, students will work in teams to write a story and create a miniature room of their own with the LEGOs.
The stories will then "come to life" as students work to create scripts and reenact the story for families and friends.
