My students need glasses, solarscopes, and an iPad to observe and record the transit of Venus.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every century or so and twice in 8 years, our closest neighbor, the planet Venus, crosses directly between the Earth and the Sun. 2004 was the last time this occurred. Unless we live until 2117, this year is the last time in our lifetime that this event will occur. We need to see it!
I teach an extremely eager and bright collection of immigrant high school students, most of whom are from low-income households.
All of them are learning English, and all have come to America to pursue the American dream of freedom, a great education and unfettered opportunity. Providing them with authentic learning opportunities is essential to helping them not only develop their language, but their skills as scientists and learners, as well.
It is my goal as a teacher for my students to experience the thrill of discovery and to find science genuinely exciting. I have had my most success when I've gotten them involved in science that connects to the wider community around us: a DNA barcoding competition to identify the species in our supermarkets, or a citizen science effort to measure and document the health of our city's trees. These endeavors show them science is communal and real, and not just something in textbooks.
My Project
The transit of Venus is an event that is engaging scientists and citizen-scientists worldwide, and has done so for centuries. By observing and marking the precise time of the transit from many locations, astronomers have used these rare transits to calculate the size of our solar system.
We hope to make this transit a school-wide event on June 5 - a celebration of science. Our goal is to invite students to share food, soda, and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to observe this rare event. These solar shades and solarscopes I am requesting will allow us to safely observe the sun. The iPad 2 can run an app linked to the worldwide transitofvenus.org effort that will precisely time the start of the transit from our location. These tools will also certainly continue to be handy in our science club and astronomy class for years to come. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is rapidly approaching. Please help make it grand!
Every year, I get up on a cold morning in December and stay outdoors all day counting birds.
The Christmas Bird Count, one of the first citizen-science efforts has changed our perception of nature, giving us a near-worldwide picture of bird diversity for over a century. Feeling connected to this grand endeavor has made me a lifelong scientist. Your donation to our project will hopefully ignite that same lifelong spark of the citizen-scientist in many students.
