This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school has a special place in New Orleans history and culture, as it has always been a prestigious school since its founding in 1932. Since becoming an open enrollment school after Hurricane Katrina and welcoming more and more students who need extra support, we have begun to think of new and innovative ways of educating all students who come to us from all over the city and continuing to be a beacon of excellence in Uptown New Orleans. We appreciate your support as we continue to push for excellence and to educate the whole child.
My Project
Our kids love to read. Now they just need a warm, comfortable, and inviting space for it. We will be hosting our monthly book clubs, author talks, slam poetry events and more in our new reading lounge. Students will be designing the space themselves and creating advertisements for books they love. This space will be for use by teachers for special events and on reading days and by our bookworms who are hosting book clubs or would rather read during lunch. The sofa, bean bag chairs, area rugs, and other furniture will create a cozy and comfortable spot for our readers, taking them away to the settings in their books. It will be a multi-purpose space that will inspire kids and adults alike to dream up new and innovative literacy projects.
