I am a pre-k teacher in a large, urban school in New York City. The children in my class are from working families in a struggling community. Our budget has been significantly cut and we need materials to make our early childhood program work. Here is a short glimpse into a few magical days of pre-k.
It's not too often when four year-old children can give you details about one famous artist, let alone describing the styles and artwork of three, but that's exactly what my young students in pre-k were able to do this year.
My young students have been introduced to three artists that made art using different tools and techniques. They have learned about Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent Van Gogh. The children proudly showed off their knowledge of the artists and the work they had done. It was amazing to see how interested they were and how excited they were to complete their very own artwork.
New ideas have come to me and I would like to explore three new unique artists with the children. They are Joseph Cornell, Jackson Pollack, and Karel Appel. During the lessons about the artists, the children will look at pictures of each master's work and will discuss the different styles used. The children will then get to choose between the long brush strokes of Appel, the box artistry of Cornell and the flinging paintings of Pollack. They can even do all of the artists if they want to.
The children are really excited about learning and I want to continue introducing them to the arts. They may be young but it's an important time for them to develop an understanding and appreciation of art and I am hopeful that this is just the beginning for them.
My four-year old students are enthusiastic about learning and attending our big community school in the heart of the Bronx. We are striving to provide a fun, challenging, nurturing and highly motivating environment for our children. This program aims at creating an interactive learning environment for children while preparing them for the success in kindergarten and beyond.
Please help me bring the arts to my young learners. Perhaps these lessons will even lead to a future famous artist among us. Thank you for reading our proposal and for caring about the education of young children.
