My students are creative thinkers, have thoughtful questions, and they amaze me with their growth each year! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that make them forget that they are learning specific reading and literacy standards! They come to school each day ready to try new things and to learn how to grow their reading and literacy skills. They are motivated by goal setting and meeting those goals every day! Truly, they are the reason I start out each day with a positive attitude!
Our seasoned staff is close-knit, and works together to get the most out of our students, so we are constantly looking for ways to engage our ever changing student population.
Our school is located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, which is on the shores of Lake Michigan. We have a good number of middle-class families, but a growing number of lower income families as well.
Each child in my classroom comes in ready to learn, although the ways and means in which they learn is different for each child. I use a variety of learning strategies, small group settings, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met.
My Project
By donating to my project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help each child reach their literacy achievement goals. The games that I have chosen will easily fit into my guided reading reading block each and every day. I have students learning with me and in centers, and these games will add to the variety of materials I have for students to use for their learning.
Through many observations, I have seen that activities which are more fun (like games or competitions) hold students' attention and focus, all while learning the skill or concept I want them to learn!
This is a great way to make sure students are on task and learning the very focused skill I am working on. I am always looking for more interesting and engaging ways to help my students learn, and these games will put more resources into my choices for use.
Using the games that work on all literacy skills will give me the flexibility to use the skill that is our focus for the unit I am teaching. It will also give the students variety in what they are doing each day so they continue to be engaged learners. I am also asking for games that focus on literary genres and word chunks because I have noticed that these two areas seem to be reoccurring themes that students need continual practice throughout the school year in my building specifically. Your donation to help purchase these games will help my students be engaged, active learners during our guided reading block of instruction.
