Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Our small town is so boring!" We live in a small town in Arkansas and students constantly lament how there's "nothing to do". Our book club will be interactive (discussions, games and movie outing) and educational! We need a high interest book to launch it. This isn't your parent's book club.

My students live in a high poverty area in a small town where they are not exposed to many engaging and educational clubs.

Students spend most of their times playing sports, video games or wandering the streets. My students are all boys who traditionally have trouble connecting with literature or ever admitting they "like to read". A book club for their generation will include activities, visuals and a window to the outside world that is so desperately needed in their lives.

My Project

A story about a youth forced to battle and hunt for her life in a post-apocalyptic world will engage a young group of boys who battle for something to do on the weekend. We need 18 copies of the most engaging book for teenagers today! 1. At a local coffee shop we'll discuss the messages and observations in the book and read about countries around the world where hunger is a real issue. 2. We'll engage in our own "Hunger Games" competition and party. This will include teams that compete in a trivia portion, a Cornucopia (story reference) challenge and a physical challenge. Winners will win a free copy of the second book in the series "Mocking Jay"! 3. We'll conclude our inaugural book with an outing to see the live action movie "The Hunger Games" out in theaters March 23rd.

My kids want SOMETHING to do!

I want to help them out and revolve it around an engaging piece of literature. The activities we plan will take effort (but that's easy). What we need is a HIGH INTEREST book--a foundation for a future of fun weekends with friends and adventures in a small town. The memories made from our first book club will be PRICELESS.
