This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach ninth grade Intensive Reading and Research in a large district in Central Florida. This school is labeled as a Title I school, meaning that the school receives additional funding because of the poverty in the area. The town is known to have many Non-English speaking citizens. 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch, with many getting backpacks of food to take home on the weekends. Many families are homeless, live in a hotel, or share housing with another family. The students are underprivileged but eager to learn. The students are kind and respectful towards me. Most of the students are the first in their family to graduate high or attend college.
My Project
As a teacher I feel it is my job to ensure that the topic of social justice is talked about and discussed in my classroom. Last year I was able to read The Hate U Give with my students, and they loved it. It created readers out of students that that did not like to read. The students were very involved in the book and wanted to read everyday.
Social Injustice is a topic so important to discuss with the students in today's classroom in order to combat racism in the world.
