Help me give my students rich literature that will promote equity and diversity beginning with self-awareness and self-acceptance, providing opportunities to see themselves in books and relate to characters in endless ways.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inquisitive, eager young learners from the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. Ranging from 6 to 7 years old, they are natives of the Caribbean Islands, Central America, and South America. My students have a pulsating thirst for gaining new skills and knowledge. They put 101% effort into all of their work, even when confronted with obstacles. I will be moving up to the second grade with them this Fall and cannot wait to continue facilitating their growth and academic development.
My Project
I believe in the power of literature as a vehicle for creating valuable connections with one another and the world. I am specifically an advocate for reading out loud to children as a shared experience, even as children get older. Read alouds let children experience the joy of a good story, while modeling fluency and expanding their vocabulary. My second graders need to be able to visualize themselves in the stories read to them, as well as learn through different perspectives. This collection of books were carefully selected with my students in mind. The characters are strong-willed and are portrayed in scenarios in which the students will identify. The stories encompass diverse voices, highlight equality, fairness, and social justice. They speak of complex families, cultures, abilities, and experiences. Please help me in my journey to build a better tomorrow, starting today!
