My Students
I teach fifth grade reading in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma! My students are a diverse group with varied levels of learning. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunches.
These students have huge hearts and love to learn in non-traditional ways, such as room transformations, integrating the arts into our lessons, and project-based learning.
My students have curiosity, creativity, compassion, and positive attitudes. They are truly amazing people. My school is wonderfully supportive of the active hands-on learning that we do in our classroom. I couldn't ask for a better learning environment for these students. We are truly a community!
My Project
One of my favorite lessons is our Spy Lab! There's nothing better than seeing the looks on students' faces as they enter our room that has been completely transformed into Shelton's Reading Spy Lab! The room is completely blacked out with "lasers" crisscrossing everywhere!
The stage is set for a learning experience that will be lasting and memorable!
We will cover some of our most difficult content that week, but the kids don't even realize they are working so hard because they are so engaged! We focus on finding evidence in nonfiction texts as we stay in character as special agents!
We will use these black lights to highlight our "lasers" (white strings crossing the entire room) and to highlight our "invisible ink" lessons. We will cover our desks with the reusable black table covers, keeping the room dark and suspenseful. I know my students will be very thankful for another learning experience that they will never forget!
