This Is Puzzling!

Help me give my students educational puzzles for hands-on learning of language concepts.

My Project

I am a speech- language pathologist to over 50 students in a Title I School in an urban city. Many of my students who come to speech -language therapy also have other challenges, such as cognitive delays and fine motor concerns.

Puzzles are "the perfect fit" for working on language, speech, cognition, and fine motor skills all at once!

During speech and language therapy, the children are working on these skills that are addressed on their IEPs, as well as learning the general education curriculum that every child has to master. Having hands-on items, such as puzzles will allow me to write lesson plans that address all of these targets at once. For the younger children, we can practice, science vocabulary, including animal names and spatial terms. I can teach this while practicing language concepts that are written into IEP goals, such as concept words, 'in, out, over, and under.' Target phonemes and speech sounds can also be practiced during puzzle work by selecting puzzles with animals and imitating their sounds, or those with cars and modeling environmental noises for the children to imitate. The children will love manipulating these colorful and interactive puzzles during speech and language therapy so much that they will not event know that they are learning skills that are crucial to their overall development and educational performance and progress.
