Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

6th graders are at that unique age where they are figuring out who they are, what they value, and what they stand for. As our school year comes to a close, students will use this time to reflect on their lives and the challenges facing our world in 2024.

In a letter to their future self, students will describe their hopes and dreams for their families and for our world.

How can we fix issues around the globe? Who are the people that matter the most to us? Where do we see ourselves ten years from now?

What family traditions and stories must be preserved for younger generations?

This project includes postage stamps, paper, and even a small plant for the student. The plant will be a living reminder that not only do we need to take care of each other, we have to take care of our planet too.

These letters will be mailed to students when they are seniors in high school. I have tried this project many times in my teaching career. In the past, I gave students fun questions like “25 things you didn’t know about me.” This time, I want to be more intentional and have our students thinking about the future and the challenges facing communities around the world. I want our students to see themselves as problem solvers and community leaders. And, just like the little plant they will receive, I hope their ideas grow and change the world.
