My Project
I teach on California's largest federally recognized Native American tribe's reservation. My school serves approximately 75% indigenous students. The campus is nestled amongst the redwoods where they meet the ocean and river. This school is so rich with culture, with traditional Yurok houses in the front, and a handmade dugout canoe as you enter the front doors. Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they thrive vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful for this new group of learners.
Books are always in high demand in school especially books that students actually want to read.
What keeps kids’ attention now a days? Honestly it's hard to say, but when I find a series or an author that my kids love, I jump on it and start getting all of their stuff.
I have a large group of kids that I have taught in previous years that are wanting to now finish the series because they have read the 5 prequals and the first book of this series.
Alane Adams writes some amazing books with a Norse mythology base and my kids have gotten into them so much they have started writing fan fiction. I have personally read all Alane Adams’ books that are of currently on the market and they are all amazing. What sets these books apart is that my students are actually excited to read them. This is my first step to creating young readers; get a book that kids actually want to read and step two, get out of the way. Thank you
