Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Is it even possible to study the texture and luster of rocks by looking at them in a textbook? I think not, and hope that my students will be able to see them in front of their own eyes through your kind contribution.
I teach Biology and freshman science in an inner city/urban public school where over 50% of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches.
There are no funds to purchase even basic supplies, so my students are unable to participate in lab activities that I have used in past years to help deliver a rigorous, college-prep curriculum. Daily life is often a challenge for many students, so textbook learning due to lack of materials only adds to their disenchantment. It pains me to know that I have the knowledge and ability to deliver a highly-engaging, memorable learning activity to them, but neither the tools nor supplies to do so.
My Project
The boxed sets of rocks and minerals will allow students to examine the rocks that previously had only been presented as color pictures in a textbook. Written descriptions on texture and luster are nothing compared to observing these key ideas hands-on and in person.
Also, a visually based review game, similar to "memory" style card games, will allow students to learn and review key concepts in a fun, engaging manner.
Your kind donation to this project will allow me to provide my students with the learning materials necessary to bring science out of the textbook, and into their hands.
Since these materials are not consumable, they will continue to educate and inspire year after year of classes, with no way of measuring their cumulative impact.
