My Students
My school is located near two military bases and has a significant number of students who are children of deployed military personnel. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. Over 10% of my students are in Indian Education or ELL programs. According to the last US Census, the average per capita income in our area was 1/3 below the city average.
The population around our neighborhood school is changing and our children are caught in this pocket of poverty.
All students qualify for free breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. Although they represent the very best in America, many of my students do not have the funds for necessary school supplies or reading materials.
I need something special to reach my students who are in fifth and sixth grade.
My Project
My library serves a population that has a significant number of at-risk and bilingual students. At our school, I have students, particularly males in grades 5-6, who are in danger of failing the key areas of reading and math. I need something different. Traditional reading programs and library skills are not working. I need something that will appeal to uninspired non-readers. I am asking for thirty-nine new books including the Rise of the Balloon Goons and a set of the Wimpy Kid series as well as book tape and contact paper to extend the life of the books.
My library needs a broad range of materials in all genres especially humorous stories, historical fiction, and fantasy since my students study these in the intermediate grades.
I plan to open the library during lunch recess and begin reading/book club so kids can read and discuss their favorite titles. These new books will help overcome the very real barriers to illiteracy in my school.
My library serves a significant number of at-risk students who are military dependents. They often cannot find books they want to read. A recent report noted that school libraries are a critical part of the learning experience. Libraries must provide equal learning opportunities to all students. Helping kids read is a joy, but finding the right book is not always easy. These desperately needed new books will attract new readers. Please donate and help my student.
