I teach at a school in Cleveland, Ohio that 100% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. These students come from backgrounds that make their social emotional coping difficult. This is not what defines my students.
My students are welcomed every day at the door by the principal and then are lead in a series of affirmations before beginning their day of learning.
These students have a strong desire to learn and need access to more materials. These materials that many students expect to have in their classrooms. These students are of varying abilities but work together to build a classroom community.
My students are eager to learn and need more materials so that they can become the scholars that they know that they are. They all have college aspirations and many will become first generation college students when they achieve their dreams.
My students look forward their opportunities to work together in STEM learning. They work with various material and problem solve when what they plan does not go the way that they want. They reflect on what they would do differently if they were given another chance to do the activity again, which many times they do.
My Project
Math Talks have been proven to help build students number sense as well as build their fluency in math facts. One area my students in the past have struggled with is math fact fluency. This kit will allow me to hold more meaningful math conversations with my students and help them to build a concrete understanding of math.
I have students who desire to be mathematicians, engineers, astronauts, and scientists when they grow up.
I have no doubt that the future of the world is within my classroom. I want to ensure that they have the fact fluency they will need to be successful in their futures.
