Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students see school as a safe place and come each day ready to learn. All students at our school qualify for free or a reduced price lunch plan and strive to make the most of each day, despite the challenges they may be facing at home.
My class loves challenging themselves to learn more, and are eager to see their growth in reading every day.
My students love being able to utilize technology in the classroom and want to be able to make the most of the two classroom computers during our literacy block.
My Project
My students are avid readers. Despite the majority of the class being one or more grade levels below where they should be, the area always eager to dive into a new book. To help stay engaged during the literacy block, we have started using centers rather than the traditional "Drop Everything and Read" approach. My students favorite center is the listening center, which we are able to utilize with Myon using one of the two computers in our classroom. The only problem, we don't have enough headphones!
We need more headphones in our classroom so that each and every student is able to take advantage of this popular center during their group's block.
Our class is made up of 6 different reading groups, and each group has a chance to use the computer center once a week during Reading Workshop. Being able to listen to books at their level being read to them allows my students to increase their vocabulary and fluency by hearing how readers change their tones depending on what they are reading. It is also extremely helpful for my language learners who may not be able to fully access books just by reading them. Right now we only have two pairs of headphones and in order to make it possible for every member of our largest reading group we need 4 new working pairs. These headphones will immediately be put to good use by allowing every student in my classroom access to Myon during our literacy block. Because we only have two computers in our classroom, the wireless feature will allow each reading group to share the computer with ease. By reading the same book on Myon they will be able to support one another and have deeper conversations about their reading.
