"Mrs. G, can I sit in the spider web chair today?" That is a question I get just about every day. In my classroom, I have one "spider web" chair that was graciously given to me by another teacher. My third graders LOVE sitting in that chair to do their work just as much as my first graders did last year. Unfortunately, I only have one which creates a problem. I want for all of my students to feel safe, comfortable, and excited while at school.
Why doesn't it bother me that my students are constantly moving?
Simple, I am also constantly moving. I have always struggled with sitting still. I learn best through movement and interaction. From getting to know my students this year, I am learning that they too learn through movement and interaction. The need to stand, wiggle, bounce, etc. is great. I don't mind if students sit, stand, lay, or kneel to do their work, as long as they are safe and engaged.
My Project
Flexible seating has been a goal of mine since I was introduced to it last year. I borrowed steppers and pedals along with my bean bags and comfy chairs to better meet the needs of my students. The difference it made was incredible! Giving my students the opportunity to stay active while learning, proved to be a positive experience. My students who had a hard time staying on task, were now focused and fully engaged. Unfortunately, the year ended and I had to return the items back.
I would love to provide my third graders with the same opportunity!
I'm requesting Bouncy Bands for Chairs, Wobble Cushions, Balance Balls, Stability Balance Disks, and an Inflatable Empire Chair. These materials will help provide a safe, comfortable, and engaged learning environment for all of my students. Instead of students trying to be the first one finished so they can sit in the "cool" chair or having to choose only one student each day, all of my students would have something that would interest and excite them!
Having this project funded will mean that forty students will be actively engaging not only their minds, but their bodies every day. They would have a comfortable environment that sets them up for success and would have a fresh excitement for learning.
It may seem like this isn't a big deal, but to a child, being given the choice of where to sit is HUGE and would be such a blessing to our classroom community.
