This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach third grade in a primarily immigrant and working-class neighborhood in southern California. My students are hard workers who are motivated to reach their goals. Many of my students are learning English as a second language. A couple of them are receiving special education, speech, and/or intervention services. All of them love to learn. Four years ago our school became a film and communication magnet. We teach students the same curriculum as before, but now we try to infuse our lessons with a film and communication focus. I am not necessarily training my students to become the next generation of great American filmmakers, but I do want them to feel confident both in front of and behind a camera.

I turn to DonorsChoose to help equip my classroom with materials that most people might consider extras.

My students have iPads from previous DonorsChoose projects, which they use as cameras. But I would like to supplement those iPads with a specialized camera that would provide some interesting filming opportunities. The Insta360 X4 is a combination of an action camera, similar to a GoPro, plus a dual-lens camera that creates videos and photos with a 360-degree perspective. I am also requesting some camera accessories such as a memory card and mic adapter.

With the addition of these materials, maybe my students could be the next Scorsese or Spielberg after all.
