I teach at a school where 100% of my children receive free breakfast and lunch. We serve a very diverse population of around 440 students. We are lucky enough to work with some kids who are inquisitive and curious. They want to learn. They just get frustrated when they have to think outside the box to solve problems.
This year we are going to focus on stem and steam activities to help our students work on their critical thinking skills.
The activities that we would like to purchase will help them with these skills.
My Project
We are starting to focus more on STEM and STEAM this school year. Our goal if our students to become more inventive thinkers. We want them to work on problem solving as well as to be able to work cooperatively in teams.
I want to find fun hands on activities to help foster a love for learning.
I want students to create their own learning. Teamwork, collaboration and communication would be the major focus behind their learning. When students are engaged they are able to make connections with their learning and apply these concepts in a more meaningful way.
Our students have a hard time of thinking outside the box. When they come upon problems they tend to stress or give up. STEM activities provide students to the opportunity fail and try again in a safe environment. They learn that is alright to make mistakes. They can learn their from their mistakes and try a new course of action.
I would like to purchase activities where students can work together to explore and create. Some of the activities that I would like to use are K'nex blocks, STEM learning kits, magnetic blocks and other manipulatives. We would use them as free stations to begin with giving them time to explore and play with them. Then we would use them for specific team challenges.
The students would love using with these manipulatives as they worked together to create and explore. The manipulatives would be used by the all the students in our school from first to fifth grade.
