Thinking Math

My students need materials to help them think, explain, and reason in mathematics. These kits offer excellent prompts to get them started! The question sets address all the main areas of math instruction in each grade.

My Students

Spanish, Japanese, Lao, and Thai... these are the home languages of my students. Some are first generation immigrants; others are second generation. Nearly all of them understand English well, whether listening or reading, but they are still working on expressing themselves in writing and speaking.

My students love to create, imagine, and laugh!

They are all so talented and enjoy using their creativity as they learn. As you can see from the photo, they are natural-born actors! They like to draw, tell stories, and one-up each other. Some of them are outgoing hams. Others struggle for confidence around their peers. Some are nervous perfectionists. Others just want to get things done. I teach them to do their best and to laugh and learn from their mistakes. I want them all to know what awesome, valuable, talented, and capable kids they are!

My Project

All students need to learn to think and reason in mathematics. They need to be able to clearly communicate their explanations and reasoning to others. This is especially important for English learners. I teach math through "Math Talks." These are deep academic discourses among students about how to reason through a problem. Students learn to use precise math language, explain the sequence of their problem-solving strategies, respectfully critique each other's reasoning, and collaborate to create meaning. Math Talks are so powerful! My students don't just "do" math; they "think" math.

These materials will provide new opportunities for my students to "think" math together.

The first through fifth grade kits have five different categories of cards, such as fractions, geometry, measurement & data, operations & algebraic thinking, and numbers & operations in base ten. Each card has a problem on it and a related question. For example, the card presents a strategy for solving a word problem and then asks if the strategy will work and how you know. The kindergarten set has three categories of questions: model, explain, and critique. The students need to show a strategy for solving a problem, explain a solution strategy, or comment on a strategy that's provided.

Students will 'talk math' in small groups with these cards. I can share these materials with my colleagues so Math Talks can happen more easily and frequently whether or not I'm able to be with them to do the teaching. And since each grade-level kit targets multiple math standards, they will be used throughout the school year. I can't wait to start using these kits with my students! Not only will my English learners benefit, but so will all the students in their classrooms!
