Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has a diverse student population of Hispanic (65%) and African American students. Our Pre-K through eighth-grade school is in a predominantly low-income neighborhood, where at least 95% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. It is a beautiful neighborhood that is plagued with challenges of poverty and gang activity.
Many of my students find our classroom to be a space to have routine, order, and love.
They enjoy helping in the classroom, taking with friends, and being silly. They love hearing stories and are eager to learn. A handful of my upcoming students struggle with emotional challenges and their peers support them and work as a true team. Each student is unique and special, and they are a loving group of kids with a great sense of humor and determination.
My Project
My students love to read and in first grade it is important that students have access to quality books of interest, but also are able to practice with books that they can read at their reading level. Therefore, I want to give each student their very own reading box that they can use during their independent and partner reading times. The will be able to pick out a mix of books that include some books of high interest, but also books that are their "right fit" books. It's a win-win scenario!
Being able to give students the opportunity to pick a variety of books is important so that they have a sense of ownership over their learning.
In addition to the book boxes we need books for the students to select to put in those boxes. We need both basic beginning reading books, and books of interest for the kids.
Finally, to help with a little bit further organization for a sense of ownership in the classroom, we need magnetic hooks so that students can reach a variety of tools. In addition to those, we also need magnetic boxes for writing tools that students use daily. All of these tools will help students become further invested and engaged in their own learning.
