Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fourth graders learn by creating. All year we have learned this way. Ending the year and reflecting on our learning through creating art, working with clay, and using technology to tell personal narratives about fourth grade will keep the memories and learning alive for years to come.

I am a fourth grade teacher in a Title I school.

That means that my students come from low socioeconomic households. Also, 65% of my students speak a language other than English at home. Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, writing, reading, science and social skills.

My Project

Allowing students to reflect on their learning through art is Empowering Students Through Art. Brains remember more when they are given the opportunity to reflect upon new information they have learned. I want our class to reflect on learning through art. Most people remember in pictures. I would like the fourth graders to work on claymation films depicting their biggest area of learning in fourth grade. Along with filming the project on iPads, the students will take still photos of their claymation movie. This way, I can print their claymation as a physical copy. This final project will be the grand finale to a fourth grade filled with project based learning. All of these projects need a place to be organized. The art portfolios give our precious work a precious place to be stored. I tell the kids I expect them to, "have this portfolio when they are 80 years old." Art portfolios make it real. And their work is real and deserving of classy presentation.

The most rewarding part of the school year is spending time evaluating how our work has changed throughout the 180 days we have been together.

As dreaded high-stakes testing begins, the students spend time evaluating their authentic school work. They file work and remember enjoyable projects, old table teammates, favorite writing projects, and subjects they used to struggle in. Portfolios and a final project about fourth grade will add to their pride and make the end of the year meaningful.
