Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They say you can be whatever you want to be. Some of my young students want to be architects or astronauts, yet often culture tells them that girls stay home and cook, and boys can be scientists and engineers. Let's break these gender stereotypes now, and help girls gain interest in the sciences.

My students are 4-year-old pre-Kindergarten students who live in one of the most highly populated urban part of the city.

Like any other young child, they like to play, experiment, sing, and make friends. They explore the world through their senses, and process it through oral language. They are rough and tumble boys who must manipulate everything. They are precocious girls who want to join in anything as long as it's pink. They come from hard-working immigrant families who want the American Dream for their children. We have worked hard at our school to cultivate a partnership with our stakeholders, and many of the parents participate and volunteer when they are not working.

My Project

The students will play with these building materials and artfully design, plan and construct buildings, walls, play areas and living spaces using fun blocks in contemporary colors. They will learn to cooperate and collaborate as they share materials and work together. They will learn about STEAM concepts such as balance, center of gravity, symmetry, size and proportion through play and exploration. They will even get to install lighting, doorbells and other working parts to their design! The students will describe their structure and the process of building it, and through language experience activities using technology, we will document their stories.

This project will improve my classroom because we have limited manipulatives and blocks.

Currently, we do not have any circuitry materials. Moreover, the girls and many boys in my class prefer pastel pinks and purples. I believe that if they are provided the opportunity to see softer, classically feminine colors on building materials, all will become interested in playing and exploring with them, and this will create a paradigm shift about gender roles.
