My students need Time and sound trackers, science readers, games, and learning center materials to integrate science into the reading curriculum.

My Students

What does reading have to do with science? Everything! My students need science readers focused on our state standards and other materials to make science reading easy and enjoyable!

My students are second graders in a high poverty elementary school.

They are well behaved and eager to learn. They are becoming more and more independent in their learning. My students also enjoy working together in small groups, but lack many of the skills needed to do so successfully. I want to give them the foundation they need to be successful in third grade and beyond. It is an honor to teach them, and I want them to have the skills and knowledge to be the best they can be!

My Project

Language arts and math are considered the most important subjects in the primary grades, but the others still can not be short changed. My request of science readers, science games and learning centers, and center management equipment will allow me to "get more bang for my teaching bucks"! My students will reap many benefits from having these materials. First, integrating science reading during the 90 minute reading block saves time and connects science to the rest of the curriculum. Additionally, reading non-fiction now will prepare my students for more difficult textbooks and standardized tests in the upper grades. Also, my students will learn to work together. The science centers and games, in addition to the center management equipment, will facilitate cooperative learning in small groups. Finally, adding learning games and centers to the science content makes non-fiction fun! What do kids know best? They know how to have fun!

This project will help my students in so many ways!

As stated above, the materials will make our instructional time more efficient and more effective while being fun at the same time! Furthermore, the materials will help prepare them for working cooperatively in small groups - a skill that is immensely important in the upper grades and life in general.
