Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students come from from a neighborhood in San Francisco. Since the 1960s, their community has been cited as a significant example of marginalization. It remains "one of the most economically disadvantaged areas of San Francisco". Root causes include a working class populace historically segregated to the outskirts of the city, high levels of industrial pollution, the closure of industry, and loss of infrastructure. The results have been high rates of unemployment, poverty, disease and crime.
These students are so resilient and bright, but sometimes they aren't able to focus in class because they experience tremendous amounts of trauma and stress.
I work in the Wellness Center, and I am a Community Health Outreach Worker. I often see students struggle with stress, trauma, illness, and depression due to things happening in their homes and in their communities. I am committed to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable space for all students.
My Project
Nutrition Education is important because it can influence the way that children view food choices and eating habits. It can inspire them to reach for fruits and vegetables and non-processed foods. It may even shape their perspective of health and wellness for the rest of their life.
Unfortunately, the sad reality is that nutrition education is rarely a priority in the public school system, primarily due to the fact that most schools simply do not have the time or the resources to focus on food/nutrition education in the classroom.
However, the importance of providing nutrition education to children of all ages cannot be overstated.
Learning about nutrition and health from an early age is essential for children. Kids tend to pick up their dietary and lifestyle habits from those that they are surrounded by, which is not always a good thing.
When you live in a low income neighborhood like most of my students do, there is often times a liquor store on every other corner. I want to be able to provide healthy drink options that still have some carbonation for students who are struggling to stop drinking soda.
Being in a classroom can often times be hard when your body is filled with chemicals, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and other additives. If I have sparkling water on hand in my office I can greet students and offer them a healthy alternative and ask them if they would like to leave their soda in my office until the end of the school day.
I am also asking for an electric kettle so that I can make students a cup of tea. I want to be able to have hot water on hand for students who come to me when they're not feeling well.
