Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a group of boys who are funny, creative, talented, and behaviorally challenged individuals who fight daily to remain focused and on task. They are a blend of kids who are in a Title I school and receive free breakfast and lunch. With life the way it is, a new way of learning is being thrust upon them at a time in their lives when that ability to learn is already a challenge, one which brings with It a new paradigm, a new learning puzzle which my students will have to work around; they already burn through many educational circuits for the privilege of an education. For this reason, I am worried about their educational needs while at home during this quarantine which they probably don’t fully understand. I’m their teacher each day, Monday-Friday and can discuss, debate, answer questions, and put out fires! Today is different for me too and we’re each trying to move forward through this maze of sharing information.
My students need a stable and conducive home/school area with books, paper, pens, markers, journals, manipulatives, etc.
to help them learn while at home.
My Project
Bringing class into our homes is a difficult job. At school, we have most of what we need, but when home becomes the classroom, there are bound to be a few necessities that students will need in order to begin this journey. I’d like to make and deliver bags to help my boys out at home. A needed reminder that summer vacation didn’t start early this year! Paper, pencils, rulers, glue sticks, writing tablets, crayons, subject matter work, multiplication charts, things they will need to succeed in this strange new world of ours. Books....we also need fluency and comprehension books and journals for home. My job will be to gather supplies, organize and distribute to each of my students in order to reach and to teach them every day from home.
