This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Closing the achievement gap begins with providing students in low-income/high poverty schools a chance to develop skills and attitudes that are crucial to success in and out of school. Students from low-income families typically enter school with a major disadvantage in academics, behavior and executive functions (i.e. impulse control, emotional regulation, attention management, prioritization of tasks, etc.,). School is often the only place they will experience a chance to develop these skills.
It is my passion to provide a safe place with all the necessary materials and quality instruction for disadvantaged students to discover their potential and harvest their abilities.
The students entering my classroom are curious, kind and anxious to grow. They come to school each day with hope and an open heart. They want to learn, they want to succeed and I want to show them that it is possible.
My Project
I have a lot of wiggly kiddos this year (wigglier than most 6 year olds). These friends struggle to sit in traditional chairs and/or on the carpet for any length of time. We spend a lot of time doing those things at school. It seems that I am constantly playing Whack-a-Mole and Chase a First Grader. I am hoping that with alternative seating choices we can diminish some of the distractions in the classroom. I am also hoping that I can hear myself say, "Sit down on your pockets" and "Stop rubbing your hand on his arm" a whole lot less.
I will be using the wobbly stools and the yoga balls for alternative seat choices for students who need continuous movement.
The cube chairs are for students who have a hard time sitting still on the carpet. The chair kick bands are for students to push their feet against. The resistance helps them keep the rest of their body still and focused. Less chaos from the students' bodies means more focus on learning.
