My students need 60+ new Independent Reading books to read, and they need some old favorites replaced, because they have been read to pieces.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We require that the students read every day, and the only way that works is to keep an in-class library well stocked with books they find interesting.
My students this year are the best, brightest, and most cooperative group of kids I've had to work with in eight years of teaching.
We're zooming through the curriculum and they've already zoomed through my little library. Annually, New York City gives letter grades to the schools and we've just received our third "A." This has created a buzz in the neighborhood, so brighter more able students have been applying and putting our school as their first choice. I want to make sure we live up to our "PR" and challenge these students in every way.
My students carry their IR books home and back in their backpacks each day, causing wear and tear. Five nights per week, part of the homework is to read 20 pages. I am happy to report that the math and science teachers in my school tell me that as soon as my students finish their work in class, they slip their IR books out to read for a few minutes while waiting for the other students to finish their lessons. They are great kids.
My Project
The students read their books, and then write Literary Letters to each other about what they read in the last reading time. I keep an "I want that one next!" list on the bulletin board because they are in effect giving mini book reviews to each other. When they finish a book there is an Annotated Bibliography sheet to fill out, so that each student has an annotated bibliography at the end of the year. This is useful when prepping for the English Regents Exam. They've asked for many of the books I am requesting, like The Hunger Games Trilogy, and The Twilight Series, The Name of the Wind is a book I think my students will love. All the Walter Dean Myers books are old friends in my classroom, and the creepy, scary books are very popular. I have a student who wants to read 1984, and Huxley's Brave New World. Now that's creepy and scary!
The students who have passed through this curriculum in my classroom passed their English Language Arts Regent Exam last spring with a 75% pass rate.
I can't take all the credit for that, but with your help I can keep on doing my part. (This number is lower that the last time we asked for your help, but then they only needed a 55 to pass, now the requirement is that each student must score at least 65% to pass.) We know we are on the right track. Thanks so much for your help in keeping us there
