They're Coming To America

I am a 4th grade teacher in a Title One Public School in New York City. I have a large class this year and each one of my students has a strong desire to learn. I have been able to feed off my students desire to learn and have begun to create an in-depth study of immigration into America, specifically New York City, during the early 1900s. Throughout this study my students will learn the reasons why people left their home countries, what opportunities awaited them upon arrival in New York Harbor and various other aspects of immigration. During this study of the various cultures that immigrated to America and made their homes in New York, my students will learn about the problems faced these travelers on the trip to America. They will also understand the troubles that awaited most immigrants upon their arrival at Ellis Island. They will also discuss the living conditions in the tenement buildings in lower Manhattan. I would love to create a learning library in my classroom with wonderful fiction and nonfiction books about immigration. I would love for the students to be able to bring these books home with them to share their new knowledge with the rest of their family. Having these books opens new and wonderful opportunities for my students. It allows them to conduct independent research and allows for open discussions with their classmates. I really hope that you have a strong desire to learn just like my students and can help us create a wonderful learning center in our classroom.
