I currently teach a dynamic and varied group of eager fourth graders at O'Keeffe Elementary on the south side of Chicago, IL. Upon my first day of teaching I soon learned what a struggle reading is for my students. Reading is something they all truly want to do, but struggle to do so on a daily basis. To continuously motivate my students to read I am always searching for reading materials. Unfortunately I have a severe lack of reading resources in my classroom due to the school I work in. It is ridiculous that due to the current condition of my school my students are not given the appropriate reading materials. However, the situation can be helped by gaining access to additional reading materials for my classroom. I currently work with all my students in groups of 6 in center work at least twice weekly. In our small center groups I am able to work with my students at their reading level, thus allowing them to successfully read! It is amazing how just much working with my students in reading groups has improved their reading skills. My students look forward to centers every week and love the feeling of triumph they encounter during our center group reading time. However, to keep centers moving I am in desperate need of current and varied reading materials. I recently encountered Time for Kids Magazine online and was instantly pleased, this is exactly what my student's need, exciting and leveled reading! In one issue of Time For Kids I can find reading materials for my lowest reading group all the way to my highest reading group, all of which is an instant success for my students. Furthermore, I am proposing a subscription for each of my students to Time for Kids magazine. I recommended looking up timeforkids.com to view further information. The opportunities that would arise with each student having their own subscription to Time for Kids in my classroom would be endless! It is so encouraging how motivated and excited my students are to read. However, I must continue to motivate and meet each student at his or her own level and Time for Kids is just the tool to do it!
