Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher at one of the most diverse schools in San Francisco Unified School District, my classroom community encompasses students who are English Language Learners, with Individualized Education Plans, and students with special needs. Our school is a Community School that relies on community based organizations and donors to sustain the high level of social emotional needs our students and families. This year, has been unspeakably difficult for my students, families, and myself.
Despite all those challenges, my students arrive to school everyday with smiles on their faces and have emerged independent, compassionate, and inspired individuals ready to solve today's problems.
With your help, we can further empower our trauma impacted community to transition out of this time stronger than ever.
My Project
Students in second grade are developing their identity as a reader and need to be exposed to new, diverse stories everyday. Through read alouds, students practice comprehension, processing, and vocabulary skills that prepare them for a life of literacy and learning.
The addition of these diverse texts will allow my students to view books as mirrors where they see themselves and the community they are part of.
Children also can examine books as windows where they can understand the world from the perspective of people from different cultures and beliefs. Books are anchors during life’s biggest storms; they are escape hatches when the world is too much to take; they are springboards to new ideas and understandings.
"Books are warm blankets and can save readers from the feelings of loneliness and heartache when they see themselves in literature. As students are discovering their place in the world, the books we provide them act as a guide in this discovery." - Katy Tessman
