Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Reading Intervention Teacher at a Title-I, Public Pre-K-6 school, in a neighborhood that is especially blighted and impoverished. I work with children who are reading at least 1.5 levels below grade level in grades 3-6.

My students struggle with basic reading tasks. These kids hate to read. They have failed at it for YEARS and getting them to merely pick up a book is a challenge. I need copies of the books about topics that interest and engage my mostly male classes.

I am lacking books for independent student reading. The books I had that my boys loved have grown legs and walked off with my students. I am happy that they are reading, but I have run out of titles that interest them. They love scary stories, all things sports, anything outrageously silly and graphic novels. They hook each other on books better than I ever could, which is why I need multiple copies, so that when inspiration strikes I can get that book (or one that is similar) in their hands immediately.

I teach about 40 students who came to school having seen thousands of books less than the average middle class child. They started their academic career significantly behind the eight ball. We're playing catch up now. If I do not reach these children, convince them that the hard work of reading is a worthwhile endeavor, they will drop out of school in a few short years when they get the chance. In a neighborhood ruled by drug dealers and gangs, what are they left with? That's where these books come into play-- they WANT to read these books. They salivate over them when a peer is reading them. They beg me to buy more. They moan when I tell them to put them away. Help me to put the books they love into their hands and show them what they are working toward.
