My students need 6 reading comprehension board games including the Context Clues Mystery Mansion Vocabulary Game, Main Street Shopping: Main Idea Game, and Pirate Island: Reading for Details Game.

I teach a wonderfully inspiring group of 2nd graders. Our school is 90% economically disadvantaged but that does not change their burning desire to learn and achieve. They inspire me on a daily basis to be the best teacher that I can be to insure they will have the same experiences and opportunities other children are afforded.
My students love reading! They also love literature centers and many tell me that it is their favorite time of the day. However, the center activities that we have now are mainly activities that I have found or made from anything I could find. Our school just does not have the means to purchase newer, hands-on reading games that teach critical thinking skills. It has been proven that children learn best through games and from getting to touch and interact with what they are learning. Many times my students cannot do this because we just don't have the supplies!
One huge step in solving this problem of not having enough fun and exciting ways to practice critical thinking skills while reading is to make available the games I have outlined in my proposal. The main critical reading concepts that 2nd graders learn are finding details, sequencing, using context clues, main idea, predicting outcomes, cause and effect, and fact and opinion. I have found many hands-on games related to all of these topics that would make wonderful literacy centers. They are bright, interesting, and challenging; everything my students would love!
You will make it possible for my students to have the same experiences and opportunities that students in higher income schools have. Many of my kids view school as a safe haven, and with your help their favorite time of the day, literacy center time, can be made all the more powerful!
