I teach second grade in a low income area. This year, I am very lucky to have many students who are reading on grade level and above. Sadly, I don't have many books for them to read on their level, because my previous classes read well below their level.
My low income 2nd graders are between 7 and 8 years old and are from many different cultural backgrounds.
It is a joy to see so many diverse races get along so beautifully with each other. Some come from homes where books are scarce, and it is important that they can find books on their reading level at school to read for pleasure. For some of my students, these are the only books that they will come across in their day.
My Project
My students need 6 leveled sets of books to read for independent reading. These books will open up a world of excitement and learning for my students. This is an age where the children absorb so much knowledge, and these books will give them the opportunity to do that. These second graders are eager to come to school because they are so interested in learning to read. You can help them maintain that momentum with your donation of books.
By providing these children with these much needed books, you are lifting their spirits and influencing them to read and learn as much as they can.
If you are familiar with this age, then you know that I do not exaggerate when I say that they will be literally jumping with joy when they see these new books!
