My Students
I currently teach thirty energetic, eager-to-learn second graders at an inner-city school located in Illinois. My students come from a variety of cultures, across a wide range of income levels located within the school's neighborhood and from other neighborhoods across the city.
Like most second graders, my students are extremely curious and love to figure out the world around them through open-ended exploration of materials, topics, ideas, and their surroundings.
I am constantly amazed by the thoughts they have, the way they express themselves, how they work to understand and communicate their experiences with one another.
My Project
Second grade is an exciting time for readers. They are learning to take control of their reading lives, are paying special attention to plot lines and characters, and they are increasing their stamina for independent reading.
Becoming "big kid" readers requires a new set of reading habits and strategies, and books to practice with.
For this project, I am requesting pairs of chapter books at second grade reading levels so that students can practice strategies for bigger books with their reading partners. Together these readers will practice summarizing chapters on post-its, tracking how characters change over time, and will use other strategies that readers need to become chapter book readers.
