This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach dual immersion kindergarten, and my students learn all day in Spanish. The goal of program is for students to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. So what does that look like? In my kinder class, it involves tons of singing, hands-on learning, and laughter along the way.

I teach 24 amazing kindergarteners in Spanish.

About half of my students are learning Spanish for the first time, and for the first part of the year, they do not know what I am saying most of the time! The other half are Spanish models, and they are in the dual immersion program to develop literacy skills and academic vocabulary in their native language. As my students make friends throughout the year, they support each other in learning a second language. They are a talkative bunch, but the more they talk, the more words they soak up! Our school is unique because it is encouraging deeper learning through in-depth investigations. We as teachers are encouraged to dive into a subject area that interests the students and develop projects that reflect their diverse thinking.

My Project

We live in the San Diego area, and this year our students have a passion for the ocean, and particularly whales. They often share stories about the beach, and they constantly are checking out books on whales and dolphins at our school's library. Our kindergarten team decided to develop a unit of study on the ocean, and our class will be focusing on whales. We plan to meet with a whale expert in our community, visit the Living Coast Discovery Center for field investigation, and ultimately present information to our families and friends on a specific species of whale. The books on this donors choose this are a crucial element to the success of this project because without strong non-fiction texts in Spanish, our students will not have the information they need to become experts on whales. High-quality Spanish texts like these are not easy to find locally, and they are expensive. But adding these books to our class library will benefit students for years to come.

My students are already naturally curious about whales, and these books will be the centerpiece of our whale investigation.

The books will help my students to research to find information and they will spark questions and conversations. Right now, we make most of our Spanish materials, and we have to print everything in black and white. My students are so used to seeing paper books that know the photographs in these texts will thrill them!
